The Richard Rodgers Theatre is a much loved New York venue. For almost 100 years, people have been flocking to see the award-winning shows here with their family and friends. Its classic design conveys an old world stateliness to the Broadway streets, and it was the first to use a “democratic seating” plan. This meant that everyone in the audience came in by the same entrance, regardless of what type of seats they had.

Whether it was the traditionally cheaper ticket-holders in the orchestra pit or the cream of society in the boxes and balcony seats, everybody entered through the same door. Once inside Richard Rodgers, you’ll see neo-Renaissance detailing in the auditorium, with steeply raked stadium seating. Because of this design, the front part of the orchestra pit is at ground level, while the rear part is one story up. The ceiling is a shallow dome, and a large balcony overhangs the rear of the orchestra. There are also four boxes on either side of the stage, on two tiers.

Hamilton Information

Since 2015, people have been going to the Richard Rodgers Theatre to see Hamilton. This multiple award-winning show is an epic historical saga, with the birth of our nation set to rousing music. It follows the career of Founding Father, Alexander Hamilton, set to a Broadway musical score with elements of hip-hop, R&B and jazz. It was written and scored by Lin-Manuel Miranda, based on an acclaimed biography.

When you attend a performance of Hamilton, you’ll be in the midst of a thrilling historical tale. You’ll see fabulous costumes and choreography, and take part in politics, romance, scandal and revolution. This is a show that’s profoundly impacted US culture, politics, and education, not to mention Broadway entertainment!

So far, Hamilton has won a record-breaking 11 Tony Awards, 7 Olivier Awards, a Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a Grammy. It’s also taken a MacArthur “genius” grant for Miranda and a special citation in the Kennedy Center Honors. When the production was adapted for television during the pandemic, it also garnered 2 Emmys.

In the last week of December, 2018, Hamilton achieved a Richard Rodgers Theatre box office record. Its gross take for that week was also the highest-grossing week in Broadway history – for any show!

The show runs for 2¾ hours, with an intermission. You can generally see it Tuesday to Saturday in the evening, with matinee performances on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.
